undertone, 2025 - ★★★

My memory could be fuzzy on this one, but I do remember a lot of hate being slung at this film when it came out, and having just seen it, I don’t see why.
While this is far from a perfect horror film, it is certainly not garbage. Definitely a small film in story, scope (it never leaves the home it takes place in), and ambition. It doesn’t strive to be anything beyond its technical and narrative constraints, and in this case, I think it makes for a much stronger film. After the closing scene and the reveals, I was really impressed. So little was shown, but for me anyways, that strategy really delivered because of the excellent audio design and the visuals that were getting conjured by my imagination!
It’s almost as if the movie was a companion piece to the audio of the film, and I thought that was quite a swing to take! The fact that it mostly succeeds was really surprising (in a good way).
Not for expecting parents or folks who have cared for a dying loved one during their last days. Wear a good set of headphones during this because the movie’s premise and strength are its sound design. I can’t imagine catching this in a theater with a shitty sound system. Now that I think of it, that’s probably why the movie wasn’t particularly well thought of when it opened.
